Danganronpa is a popular series due to its intermix of various genres ranging from mystery to school life to horror. Its first game came out in , and its latest was released in Since the latest game, fans are wondering if there will be anymore to the series.

What is known is that the series is, at the very least, taking a long break. For those looking for more games like Danganronpa, there are some titles that are considered to be comparable.

Do not expect pink blood in any of them, but expect plenty of mystery, anime designs, and twists! Updated on February 6th, by Geoffrey Martin: More and more games similar to Danganronpa continue to be released, seemingly each and every month.

Similar titles, especially from the indie scene, are blending some unique gameplay elements to create great narrative gaming experiences. One of the best parts of Danganronpa is the visual novel aspect. Being able to weave a tight visual novel story with other gameplay elements can be tricky but there are a couple of extra games that deserve to be mentioned in this list. Arcadia Fallen is easily one of the very best visual novels from the indie gaming scene.

This lengthy and highly enjoyable game tells the tale of a band of misfits including a demon hunter, an alchemist, a bard, and even a spirit. The characters in this game must work to stop a demon invasion.

What makes Arcadia Fallen truly special is how dialogue and interactions play out. Your customizable alchemist character is able to thoughtfully respond to many of the dialogue prompts, with the game kindly letting you know what type of emotion it will illicit.

On top of that, you are able to take part in alchemic crafting where the outcomes help dictate parts of the story. Simply put, this magical and fantastical tale will keep you hooked all throughout. My Aunt is a Witch is probably a puzzle adventure visual novel game that many fans of the genre have glossed over.

This indie game, developed by Graven Visual Novels, might look way too cartoony on the surface, however, it ends up providing a deep and nuanced adventure about witches, warlocks, and other magical beings. You play as a young boy who must head out to stay with his aunt, who, as the title implies, happens to be a powerful witch.

Unfortunately, his aunt isn’t all that she is cracked up to be. While she is powerful, she is also somewhat of an outcast. Together, the two, and her cat, must explore various lands while solving puzzles and figuring out why darkness hangs over the kingdom. Ace Attorney is often compared to Danganronpa, though it is far less dark. Like Danganronpa, it is up to the player to collect evidence and deal out their arguments in a courtroom.

While the story is quite different, the mechanics and gameplay are quite alike. The story follows an attorney and his sidekick as they solve different cases. The characters are quite goofy and memorable. Exile Election is very much like Danganronpa as well as the Zero Escape series. The story takes place in an abandoned amusement park, where 12 characters are forced to play a killing game. It is a fantastic title on its own and is especially sought out by Danganronpa fans.

Unfortunately, it is not released worldwide. It is only localized in Asia, for now. For fans who loved the darker side of Danganronpa, the Corpse Party games are another Japanese horror game of choice. The games follow high school students that get spirited away to a haunted elementary school. Like Danganronpa, this series was popular enough to get its own anime adaptation. It also is a visual novel game, but with puzzles and choices blended in.

A major part of the Danganronpa series focuses on the main cast being trapped with no way out. The Zero Escape series does the same thing, but with characters of far different ages and backgrounds.

The visual novel series has three games and its gameplay is puzzle-focused. No courtroom arguments here, but plenty of mystery and twists. Released in for the PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Microsoft Windows, Ai: Somnium Files is a mystery adventure game where you get to play a detective solving a sci-fi murder mystery.

He not only investigates crime scenes but dreams as well. The neo-noir game takes place in future Tokyo. Named after the dystopian novelist who wrote the famous , Orwell is a game where players are state operatives that have access to security surveillance systems in a fictional authoritarian country called The Nation. Like visual novel titles, the game is quite narrative-heavy. Like Danganronpa, it will keep the player guessing what is really going on and what to suspect.

It has some weak points in its gameplay, but certainly not in its story. Released in , this point-and-click mystery adventure game is based on the popular novel. The plot is the same with some minor changes.

It is a great game for both fans of the novel as well as those who have never heard of it before. While the game has mostly positive reviews on Steam, some mild criticisms include that the game is so linear that there is little room to explore. While not as long or as visually intriguing as Danganronpa, this mystery visual novel has dynamic characters and memorable twists. The game is a slow burn at first, starting with trope-centered characters. However, much like Danganronpa, they get more depth as the story moves forward.

The game also has five endings. The story is about ten friends that stay in a secluded mountain resort. Of course, it is revealed there is a murderer among them and they are trapped here. The Persona games are for Danganronpa fans whose favorite parts were the increments of free time. The games are definitely not as dark or rooted in mystery, but they focus on Japanese high school characters in a not-normal situation.

The games will take way longer than Danganronpa and have way more JRPG elements, but like Danganronpa, have spawned their own anime cutscenes and shows. Released worldwide in , this adventure DS game is a Capcom creation.

The protagonist is a ghost who is trying to find out who he was in life and who killed him. The development and writing of the game was actually handled by Shu Takumi, the creator of the Ace Attorney games.

The gameplay does not consist of debating in a courtroom, but it is filled with puzzles. This series has spawned many titles, with its first in and latest in It’s not dark like Danganronpa, but it is a puzzle adventure with point-and-click exploration elements.

Of course, there is also a ton of mystery to solve and evidence to find. The series has been quite influential, not only getting its own anime adaptation, but manga, feature film, and books as well. Released in , this visual novel takes place with its protagonist perishing in an explosion.

She, along with 11 others, wake up to find themselves in a ritual called the Divine Selection. They compete with each other with the undoing of their death as the prize.

In another similar sense, the characters are forced to play a game that will determine their fate. It’s not a killing game the characters are already dead but an intriguing one nonetheless.

Notably, this game has actual combat. No court drama here. Taking place in London during the late s, these games have players take on the role of the famous Sherlock Holmes. The series has gone on for some time, which its first title released in and its latest in Like Danganronpa, the player must find clues in the various explore-able environments.

While gameplay style has ranged a bit, most of the series is in a point-and-click sort of style. This psychological horror visual novel is a hidden gem. You are trapped in a village with other characters and are being hunted by ancient gods. The game has great replayability, with a branching flowchart of consequences to different choices. There is even a new game plus that unlocks the thoughts of certain characters.

Due to the great writing, players often replay until they find out everything they can.
