Seagrasses Environmental Benefits
Seagrasses are known as “the lungs of the sea” due to their propensity to produce massive amounts of oxygen. Just one square metre of seagrass emits over ten litres of oxygen per day through the process of photosynthesis. This is a significant amount of oxygen for only one small area of plant matter. If one is doing water sports like snorkelling or diving over a seagrass meadow, they will see the oxygen being emitted by the seagrass as it floats up to the surface of the water.
Due to the trait of seagrass being highly photosynthetically productive, it can absorb enormous quantities of carbon from the atmosphere.
Annually, one square metre of seagrass absorbs up to 83 grams of carbon per year, and seagrass meadows hold around 15% of the carbon stored in the ocean. These statistics are quite amazing, considering they comprise of only 0.1% of the ocean floor.
